About Us
The Department of Legal Metrology is a regulatory Department. It is responsible for maintaining uniformity and accuracy in all weights and measures, weighing and measuring Instruments used by traders in all hats, markets and trading centres in the State. The main functions of the Department is to implement the provisions of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011, the Legal Metrology (Enforcement) Rules, 2011 and the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011.
Functions
The Department acts as an instrument to safeguard the consumers from unscrupulous traders. In implementing the provisions of the aforesaid Act/Rules, the Inspectors of Legal Metrology are conducting periodical verification, re-verification and stamping of all weights & measures, weighing and measuring instruments of all traders including weighbridges, Dispensing Pumps in Petrol Retail Outlets, L.P.G. Depots etc. Surprise Inspections, raids and seizures are also undertaken regularly by the enforcement staff to eliminate the use of illegal and non-standard weights and measures and also to discourage short delivery, overcharging of prices of Packaged Commodities. Whenever short deliveries, overcharging of prices possession and use of unstamped weights and measures are detected by the Enforcement Staff, the offenders are booked and prosecuted under relevant sections of the above Act/Rules. The Department is consumer-centric and stands committed to protect the consumers from unscrupulous traders. Legal actions are being taken by the Department against the defaulters and mal-practices in weighing and measuring and also in charging higher price than the marked price on all packaged goods. Offenders are punished with compounding fines, etc., as per provision of the Weights & Measures Act/Rules. Cases of a serious nature are dealt with by the Courts.
Infrastructure
The Department of Legal Metrology has 2(Two) Secondary Standard Laboratories in the State which are located and kept in the custody of the Assistant Controller of Legal Metrology, Eastern Zone, Shillong and the Assistant Controller of Legal Metrology, Western Zone, Tura respectively. Both the Laboratories are equipped with Mechanical Standard Equipments.
There are also Working Standard Laboratories in all the 8(Eight) Inspector of Legal Metrology Offices at Shillong, Sohra, Nongpoh, Nongstoin, Jowai, Tura, Williamnagar and Baghmara. These Laboratories are equipped with Mechanical Standard Equipments.
Electronic Working Standard Balances are also available in the Laboratories of the Inspector of Legal Metrology at Shillong, Sohra, Nongpoh, Nongstoin, Jowai, Tura, Williamnagar.
